Bacone, Oklahoma is a small town located in Muskogee County in the northeastern part of the state. With a population of approximately 275 people, Bacone may be considered a quiet and tight-knit community. Despite its small size, Bacone holds a significant historical and cultural significance.

Originally known as the Creek Nation, Bacone was established as a Presbyterian mission in 1880. The mission aimed to provide education and religious teachings to the local Native American population. Over time, it grew into a boarding school and was eventually renamed Bacone Indian University in 1983. Today, Bacone Indian University continues to strive towards its mission of preserving and promoting Native American heritage through education.
