Kanesville, also known as Winter Quarters, was a historical settlement located in present-day Council Bluffs, Iowa. In the mid-19th century, it served as a temporary refuge for the early members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) as they prepared for their journey west to what would become Salt Lake City, Utah.

In 1846, due to religious persecution and conflicts in Illinois, the LDS Church leaders led by Brigham Young decided to evacuate their growing community and find a new home in the West. Kanesville was chosen as the gathering place for the Saints to regroup, organize, and make preparations for the arduous journey ahead. It became a thriving settlement and the leading temporary headquarters for the LDS Church from 1846 to 1852.

The Winter Quarters settlement was established along the Missouri River and encompassed an area of about five square miles. It consisted of numerous log cabins, sod houses, and a large central square where important meetings and events were held. The Saints who settled in Winter Quarters faced many challenges, including limited supplies, harsh weather conditions, and outbreaks of disease. Thousands of Mormons died during their stay in Winter Quarters, especially during the winter of 1846-1847, leading to the construction of a cemetery known as the Mormon Pioneer Cemetery.

Despite the hardships, Winter Quarters also witnessed great acts of faith, resilience, and community building. The settlers established schools, factories, and farms to sustain themselves in preparation for their westward migration. It was in Winter Quarters that Brigham Young was sustained as the president of the LDS Church, following the death of Joseph Smith.

Today, Kanesville stands as a historic site with several markers and monuments commemorating the early Mormon pioneers and their sacrifices. The Mormon Pioneer Cemetery, now a protected area, pays tribute to the Saints who perished during their time in Winter Quarters. Visitors can explore the various historical landmarks and gain insights into the early days of the LDS Church and the enduring spirit of its members.
